Genesis Chronology Explained
by M. Fortner
You may be wondering where I got my dates in the Genesis Chronology; I thought it would be obvious but I guess it is not. Calling the first year of Earth "year 1" and Adam was not 1-years old until a year had passed; when Adam was 1 years old, the year was year 2. The following tells us that Seth was born in the year 131:3 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image, and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died. 6 When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived 912 years, and then he died. 9 When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. And after he became the father of Kenan, Enosh live 185 years and had other sons and daughters. 11 Altogether, Enosh lived 905 years, and then he died. 12 When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. . . . (Genesis 5:3-13)From this we can figure the dates, since the Bible gives us a complete accounting from Adam to Jacob and the rest of the dates are gotten through back-dating.
But first I will explain more about the forward dating. Notice that in the above passage we can deduce that Adam was 395 years old when Mahalalel was born. And that Adam died in the year 931 because he lived 930 years. If we continue with this figuring, we will learn that Noah's father, Lamech, was born in 875, which means that Noah's father knew Adam personally because Adam did not die until 931. Lamech was 182 years old when Noah was born and the flood took place when Noah was 600 years old, therefore the flood must have taken place in 1657 After Creation.
Noah lived another 350 years after the flood because he lived a total of 950 years. The Bible gives us clear ages of when so and so was born and so there can be no doubt when Noah died and when Abraham was born.
Shem was 100 years old at the flood, and Shem was 102 years old when Arphaxed was born, making the year 1659 After Creation. Arphaxed was 35 years old when Shelah was born, Shelah was 30 years old when Eber was born, Eber was 34 years old when Peleg was born, Peleg was 30 years old when Reu was born, Reu was 32 years old when Serug was born, Serug was 30 years old when Nahor was born, Nahor was 29 years old when Terah was born, Terah was 70 years old when Abram was born.
All you have to do is simple math to figure out that if Noah live 350 years after the flood, then he died when Abraham was 58 years old.
Back-dating is similar, except that the Bible does not tell us how old Jacob was when Joseph was born, but it does tell us how old Joseph was when he became ruler of Egypt and that he ruled for 10 years before Jacob entered Egypt, [1] and it tells us how old Jacob was when he entered Egypt, therefore we can figure out how old Jacob was when Joseph was born. This type of back-dating can be done through Moses.

(Seven years of plenty, plus seven years of famine= 14 years, so Jacob entered Egypt when the famine was close to 1/2 over.)
